Welcome to the GFAR Update!

The GFAR Collective Action on Transformational Learning and Student Leadership Development aims to adapt to changes in the dynamic environments of agricultural and life science universities around the world,  and to mend the gap that exists in producing the right caliber of university graduates who can meet societal demands. Concerned partner universities in Africa have established a platform committed to promote transformational learning and to apply the concept in their own universities. Below, read about a platform of stakeholders formed last month in Near East and Northern Africa among numerous Partners in GFAR , thereby scaling the initiative out to another Region.

On May 28-30, the GFAR Steering Committee will again convene to discuss taking forward this and other GFAR Collective Actions, according to the priorities expressed by the Partners in GFAR. The objectives of this meeting include:
• To assess progress and lessons learnt on the development and implementation of Collective Actions
• Through participatory methodologies, to enable the forward plan and operation of GFAR to be driven, shaped and committed to by all sectors represented
• To finalise the Medium Term (2018 – 2021) Plan Strategic priorities and resourcing strategy
• To articulate The GFAR Way of networked operation, responsibilities and accountabilities

Farm Radio International was in the Partner Spotlight May 7-11, sharing inspiring stories of support to small-scale farming and rural communities by using radio as a tool for circulating information tailored to their unique contexts and circumstances.

Finally, check out GFAR's new video series, GFAR Talks! Below you'll find a video with Prof. Prabhu Pingali of Cornell University, who talks from the field about the urgent need to bring focus on agricultural systems that promote diversity, health and nutrition, as well as profitability for smallholder farmers. And in an interview with an Egyptian TV news channel, Dr. El-Kaffass of GFAR Secretariat speaks about GFAR's Collective Action on Transformational Learning and Student Leadership.

GFAR Update is a briefing service from the GFAR Secretariat. Our aim is to keep you regularly informed and aware of new initiatives and Collective Actions of the Partners in GFAR around the world, so that these can have greater reach and impact for those we serve - in particular for poor smallholder farmers and consumers. Please let the GFAR Secretariat know how you work with other Partners to help shape the future of agriculture, so that we can share your stories with everyone in our networks!
