The GFAR stakeholders gathered in Dresden, Germany, 21 ¿ 23 May 2000 where they
developed a Global Shared Vision which strongly reaffirms the three main objectives of global agricultural research, namely: food security; poverty alleviation; and sustainable natural resources management.
The present issues paper is assigned the functions of: 1) Explaining the environment in which the ¿GSV Statement¿ is prepared; 2) Analysing the most significant changes and trends in GFAR¿s context; 3) Interpreting the scope of the Vision.
The purpose of this report is: 1) to report on progress made during the initial phase of development of GFAR both in terms of organization and activities; 2) to highlight the pending and new challenges that GFAR faces in its consolidation, and to suggest ways to address them.

The GFAR stakeholders envision the development of an agriculture which is: 1)sustainable, equitable, gender sensitive, profitable and competitive, fulfilling its functions in the context of community-centered rural development; 2) diversified in its structure to cope with heterogeneous agro-ecological and socio-economic environments, but in which the family farm continues to play an important role; 3) deeply innovative, based on the use of knowledge, both modern and traditional.
Les partenaires du GFAR réunis à Dresde en Allemagne du 21 au 23 mai 2000 ont développé une vision partagée qui réaffirme avec force les trois grands objectifs de la recherche agricole mondiale : la sécurité alimentaire ; la lutte contre la pauvreté ; la gestion durable des ressources naturelles.
Los participantes del GFAR reunidos en Dresden, Alemania, del 21 al 23 de mayo
2000, han desarrollado un Perspectiva Común Global que reitera con énfasis los tres objetivos principales de la investigación agropecuaria global, a saber: la seguridad alimentaria; el alivio de la pobreza; y el manejo sostenible de los recursos naturales.

¿This ¿group discussions¿ session provides the first opportunity for members of the
different GFAR stakeholder constituencies to have a ¿face-to-face¿ dialogue and to
openly and freely discuss their motivations, contributions and expectations from GFAR.
