The general topic of this 9th General Assembly of EADI is that of re-thinking the
relationship between Europe and the developing world in this turn of century. Within this general
theme, we have been asked in our session to look more specifically at scientific and technical
cooperation and at the new opportunities and challenges it faces in the new century. This paper
will analyze these issues in the context of scientific research and technical cooperation in the

¿The GFAR-2000 Conference will take place in Dresden from Sunday, May 21 to Tuesday 23,2000. Pre-GFAR-2000 meetings will take place on Saturday, May 20. A GFAR Steering
Committee meeting will be held on Thursday, May 25 and a GFAR Support Group meeting on Friday, May 26, 2000. Attached are a draft agenda and an outline of the week¿s activities.¿
